“I’m Not A Regular Mom, I’m A Cool Mom.”
Although it comes naturally for some, many mothers feel the pressure to be the cool mom all of the time. Whether you know it or not, there are giveaway signs that show you’re awesome on both sides of the spectrum. You can be the coolest mom for obvious reasons but often your uncool moments unveil why you’re Super Mom. Here’s how we’ve broken it down:
1. Your Kid’s Friends Love You
You’re that mom all the kids choose to drive them to soccer practice. When your kid’s friends come over after school they spend time chatting with you. You don’t know it but “OMG I love your mom” is what they text to your child after they leave your house.
2. You Listen Without Judgement
Your kids can tell you everything because you’ve never judged them. They feel safe coming to you when they’re upset or do something uncertain. They’ll truly believe “Mom’s always right” if you never make them feel bad about themselves with your advice.
3. You’re A Cheerleader
You show up when you can. If they weren’t embarrassed, you’d bring pom-poms to every sports game your kids are competing in. You’re their biggest supporter in everything they do and you post their scribbly artwork on the fridge.
4. Your Teen Steals Your Clothes
If your 16-year-old is borrowing your jewelry and asking where you got your shirt, you know you’ve got style. You’re okay with them spilling ketchup on your favorite top because them wearing it was the biggest confidence boost.
5. You Put Family First
Nothing is cooler than putting your family first. You understand that family is the most important part of your life and you show it by caring for their needs. You’d skip a workout class to help your kid finish their project or you’d take a half day at work if they’re home sick.
6. You’re A Big Kid At Heart
You don’t always watch them at playtime, you get involved. You love to play games, run around in the yard, and you're the messiest chef making mud pies. You’re a tickle monster that laughs at your jokes and light-heartedly teases the kids.
7. You Own The Party House
You’re the cool mom because your house is always filled with youngsters. Your kid’s get-togethers are often held at your residence because they don’t mind having you around. You can keep an eye on them without being overbearing and they respect you for it.
8. You’re Trustworthy
If other kids come to you with their problems you know you’re a trustworthy person. The kids involve you in the gossip because they know they can trust you with secrets like their latest crush. It’s cool that they know you have their backs.
9. Your House Is Messy
A messy house shows you know how to have a good time. You can’t keep the place clean all the time if you have kids living in it and don’t want to follow them around with a mop. A heap of laundry might be a sign your home is being lived in and is not just for chores.
10. You Show Love In Many Ways
You’re that mom who sneaks your kid’s favorite treat in their lunch bag on occasion or stays up late helping them study for the exam. You show love by taking them to their after-school activities or by celebrating their accomplishments as well as their downfalls.
Those signs might indicate that you’re a chill mama but it’s cool to be the uncool mom sometimes too.
1. You’re A Hugger
You love your kids so much that you can’t help but want to squeeze them all the time. You might invade their personal space from time to time but they’re too cute and you want to express your love. They might get embarrassed if you hold their hands while taking them to school but you understand.
2. You Take Time For Yourself
You put your kids’ needs before your own needs most of the time so don’t feel guilty taking time for yourself. They might make you feel bad for leaving the house to get a massage but Mama deserves some pampering.
3. You Have Bad Days
Being imperfect is being true to yourself. You can’t always have it together and your kids need to see that it’s ok to have emotions. You might feel uncool crying in front of your kids but it teaches them that moms need to be comforted too.
4. You Always Want To Be A Better Mom
You should be drinking your coffee from a #1 Mom mug because it’s true. Many mothers feel they’re not good enough and are always striving to do it better. You shouldn’t constantly compare your parenting style to others but doing so just shows how much you care about your kids.
5. You Wear Mom Jeans
Thank goodness sweatsuits are trendy right now but if you have children we don’t expect you to wear a dress suit. Gone are the days of the 1950’s housewife expectations and you don’t need to wear makeup to pick the kids up from school. Embrace those mom jeans–– the kids are wearing them now too.
6. You’re Protective
You care about the health and safety of your children and it shows. You get them to wash their hands before dinner and you walk with them to the bus stop. Sometimes they think you’re overbearing but you’re just making sure they’re ok and not getting bullied at school.
7. You’re Not A “Yes Mom”
You can’t say “yes” to everything which means your kids will think you’re uncool sometimes. As long as you’re not a “No Mom” then you’re classified as a cool mother who knows she owns authority. They’ll understand when they’re older why they can’t always get what they want.
8. You Show Your Emotions
You raised your voice today after your kid made a rude comment and you feel bad about it. You woke up grouchy because your baby kept you up all night or you’re stressed because of work. You can’t bottle up your true feelings and you can’t be happy all the time–– it’s cool to be emotional.
9. You Have Rules
It’s hard to be the cool parent when you have rules but you need some guidelines to be respected. You put curfews in place for the kids’ well-being and you limit their sugar intake for their health. They might think you’re uncool now but they’ll benefit in the long run.
10. Sometimes Dad Wins
Kids have no filters and they flip-flop their favorites on a daily basis. If your answer was “no” they might turn to Dad for another opinion. Sometimes they’re going be on “Team Dad” but other days you’re their queen. Celebrate your wins when you can but don’t fuss about the losses.
